Support for Adults with Newly Acquired Stuttering

We provide stuttering support for teens and adults, who’ve experienced a change in their fluency. Perhaps you thought stuttering was an artifact of your childhood or perhaps it’s a new experience altogether.

Therapy isn't about eliminating who you are as a speaker. It's about building confidence, communication tools, and strategies that work for you, on your terms. We offer both stuttering modification and fluency shaping approaches, and collaboratively tailor treatment to your goals.

What Is Acquired or Renewed Stuttering?

Stuttering that emerges or changes in the teen or adult years, sometimes called acquired or neurogenic stuttering, can differ from childhood-onset stuttering in how it presents and what may be contributing to it. It can follow a stroke, brain injury, or neurological condition, or it may simply be a stutter re-emerging or shifting in pattern later in life without a clear precipitating event. Whatever the cause, it's assessed and treated with the same care and evidence-based approach as any other stuttering pattern.

Stuttering itself involves disruptions in the flow of speech, repetitions, prolongations, or blocks, that may be accompanied by tension or anxiety. It can affect confidence in social situations, workplaces, presentations, school, and everyday conversations.
